About
MythTv is an open source PVR solution. You can read all about it here: http://www.mythtv.org/
An easy way to get up and running is to use a Linux distribution which will simplify the installation and maintenance process. My favorite is Mythbuntu: http://www.mythbuntu.org/
This blog is a place where I post anything I think might help others as I journey through MythTv installations and setup. My current setup consists of a Mythbuntu 64-bit box in the living room acting as both backed and fronted roles, and a Mythbuntu 32-bit box as a fronted only client in my bedroom.
I used to use Windows Vista Media Center but switched to MythTv for a number of reasons, including:
- MythTV is free
- MythTV can stream live and recorded TV around your house from one central server.
- MythTV can turn a dual tuner DVB card into 10 tuners! (more info here)
- MythTV supports subtitle and interactive (aka red button) functionality on DVB streams.
- MythVideo can play pretty much any video format you throw at it (including DVD isos and mkvs) and has great IMDB intergration
- MythWeb provides web browser based scheduling and configuration - set something to record when you aren’t at home!
