About

MythTv is an open source PVR solution. You can read all about it here: http://www.mythtv.org/

An easy way to get up and running is to use a Linux distribution which will simplify the installation and maintenance process. My favorite is Mythbuntu:  http://www.mythbuntu.org/

This blog is a place where I post anything I think might help others as I journey through MythTv installations and setup. My current setup consists of a Mythbuntu 64-bit box in the living room acting as both backed and fronted roles, and a Mythbuntu 32-bit box as a fronted only client in my bedroom.

I used to use Windows Vista Media Center but switched to MythTv for a number of reasons, including:

  1. MythTV is free
  2. MythTV can stream live and recorded TV around your house from one central server.
  3. MythTV can turn a dual tuner DVB card into 10 tuners! (more info here)
  4. MythTV supports subtitle and interactive (aka red button) functionality on DVB streams.
  5. MythVideo can play pretty much any video format you throw at it (including DVD isos and mkvs) and has great IMDB intergration
  6. MythWeb provides web browser based scheduling and configuration - set something to record when you aren’t at home!
